Welcome to Box Word Secret

Box Word Secret is a crossword-style game where the first letters of every answer combine to reveal a hidden anagram. Solve the clues, fill the grid, and uncover the secret word waiting inside.

The game was inspired by Randall Munroe's excellent book, Thing Explainer, which uses only the thousand ("ten hundred") most common English words — a fun constraint we borrowed to shape the experience.

Puzzles start easy on Monday and get progressively harder through the week. Saturday puzzles are kid friendly (thought not necessarily easy), and Sunday puzzles could be anything! Maybe extra tricky, maybe different rules, or maybe an entirely new game!

How to Play

• Click or hover over the first cell of a word to see the clue.
• Clues consist of only the 1000 most common English words, but the answers can be any word!
• Click on a cell to enter a letter.
• The puzzle auto-advances to the next cell in the word.
• Use the arrow keys to navigate the grid.
• The first letters of each answer form an anagram.
• Look for a theme! There will be a few related words in the puzzle that relate to the anagram.
• Fill in the solution to the anagram at the bottom of the page.
• Click "Submit" to check your answers.
